What is UKVI test?

The UKVI (United Kingdom Visas and Immigration) test is an English language assessment required for individuals applying for certain types of UK visas, immigration, or citizenship. It measures the English proficiency of non-native speakers to ensure they have the language skills necessary to live, work, or study in the UK.

There are different versions of the test, depending on the type of visa or immigration route you are applying for, such as:

1. UKVI IELTS: An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam specifically for UK visa purposes. It is commonly required for work, study, or settlement applications.

2. SELT (Secure English Language Test): These tests are approved by the UK Home Office and include options such as the IELTS for UKVI, PTE UKVI, and others.

The test evaluates four key skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The test must be taken at an official, UK government-approved testing center (like PSI UKVI centers) to be valid for immigration or visa purposes.

The level of proficiency required depends on the type of visa being applied for, typically aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels (A1, B1, etc.).

Format of UKVI test

The UKVI PSI English test follows a structured format to assess your proficiency in English, covering four key skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Here’s a breakdown of the exam pattern:

1. Listening:
  • Duration: About 30 minutes
  • Format: You will listen to various recordings, such as conversations, monologues, or group discussions, and answer questions based on what you’ve heard.
  • Question Types: Multiple choice, sentence completion, matching, and more.
2. Reading:
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format: This section assesses your ability to understand and interpret written texts, ranging from descriptive passages to argumentative essays.
  • Question Types: Multiple choice, identifying information, matching headings to paragraphs, and short-answer questions.
3. Writing:
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format: You’ll be asked to write essays or reports, often including two tasks: one shorter and one longer.
  • Task Types: You may be asked to describe data (charts, graphs), explain viewpoints, or write a letter.
4. Speaking:
  • Duration: 11–14 minutes
  • Format: The speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It includes a general conversation, a short talk on a given topic, and a discussion based on that topic.
  • Sections: Introduction, individual long turn, and two-way discussion.
  • The overall test duration is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. The exam assesses practical, everyday English skills needed for living and working in the UK.
